After five editions as Destiny Careers, meet the new us: moving forward, just call us CAREERS MAGAZINE. This new era comes in the middle of uncertainty, both in South Africa and the rest of the world. But has uncertainty ever been a reason to stop chasing your dreams and ambitions? I think not. Okay fine, for many of us it often has been, but as ice hockey player Wayne Gretzky once said: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.
As the world and the analysts who populate it try to figure out what a post-pandemic earth will look like, we at CAREERS are only a little bit different. Instead of focusing on what the world will be like, we’re more focused on the role we want to play in it; in what our contribution will be towards building the country and continent we know we can be and deserve to be.
We don’t have lofty expectations of changing the world (just kidding – we totally do), but we want to contribute positively to the lives of those who are young and those who are young at heart. We want to open people’s minds beyond the possibilities that await them and show them the possibilities they can create – both for themselves and for others.
A career is many things and a career is what you make it, but that can be difficult to see through the smoke of indoctrination and old school advice that suggests otherwise. The truth is, each of us play a role in shaping what the world of work will look like – but no one ever tells us that or shows us how.
Our June edition is about owning your narrative, and few brands represent that as successfully as MAXHOSA AFRICA. That’s why working with them on the cover was a no-brainer: the family behind the brand were actively involved in every step of the creative process. So involved they even art-directed and shot the group selfie that is now our cover!
As CAREERS MAGAZINE walks the path to what each of us in the team know it can and will be, we aim to be that source of information and confidence: an eye-opening, thought-provoking, practical and slightly cheeky (of course) publication where the content is as delicious as the design that brings it to life.
So, yes, magazines are dying everywhere, economies are in shambles and the pandemic is king right now but like you, dear reader, CAREERS is nothing if not brave. And bold.
You’ve got this, and we’re here to remind you of that and to show you the way.
